character lifecycle detail (Character Lifecycle)

Character Creation and Lifecycle

Your Account may own several Characters, but ordinary players may have
only one lifecycle ACTIVE Character at a time.

List the Characters on your Account with:

    characters

The list shows each Character and its lifecycle state.

IN_CHARGEN

Begin or resume character creation with:

    charcreate

If an IN_CHARGEN Character already exists, chargen resumes that Character
rather than creating another one. The current chargen sequence covers
identity, Attributes, Skills, Edges, Disadvantages, Assets and Review.

Chargen completion performs the required lifecycle validation and
initialization before a Character becomes ACTIVE.

ACTIVE

An ordinary player who logs in with an ACTIVE Character is automatically
returned to that Character. There is no player character-selection screen
while an ACTIVE Character exists.

Bare ic, puppet, ooc and unpuppet are staff Account-control
commands. Ordinary players do not use them to switch Characters.

VACATION

If you have no ACTIVE Character but have one or more Characters in
VACATION, login remains on the Account side. Review them with:

    characters

Return one VACATION Character to play with:

    activate <character>

You may also use the #DBREF displayed by characters when names are
ambiguous. Activation is a lifecycle transition from VACATION to ACTIVE;
it is not arbitrary puppeting. Another ACTIVE Character blocks it.

PERMADEAD

A PERMADEAD Character remains part of Account history but cannot be
activated.

Presence while playing

Character participation is separate from Account lifecycle. While outside
active combat, use @ic, @ooc and @afk to change participation
without moving or removing the physical Character body.

An unexpected final-session disconnect temporarily protects an ordinary
player by forcing the still-present ACTIVE body to OOC and restoring the
previous participation state on reconnect. An explicit quit or
quit/all is intentional and does not grant that automatic protection.

Use help characters, help activate and help charcreate for
command syntax. Use help @ic, help @ooc and help @afk for
Character participation controls.
