Character Advancement
Open your advancement menu with:
advancement
From there you can raise natural Attributes, claim earned Skill
advancement, purchase eligible Edges, or respecialize -- all spent
with Character Points (see help tokens for how CP is earned).
Skills advance through use, not CP
Skills below Familiar (rating 2) grow automatically the more you use
them meaningfully. You are notified the moment a Skill rises this way.
From Familiar (2) upward, a Skill accumulates experience through
meaningful use until it is ready to advance, but you must claim that
advancement yourself in the advancement menu -- one rank at a
time. You are notified as soon as a Skill becomes eligible.
Skills cannot be bought up with Character Points. Only genuine,
appropriately challenging practice moves them forward. Repeating the
exact same narrow situation over and over yields rapidly diminishing
returns -- meaningful variety trains faster than grinding one trick.
Slots at the highest ratings
Only a limited number of your Skills can sit at the highest ratings at
once (Master and near-Master ratings are the most restricted; Adept
and below have more room, and Novice and below are unlimited). If
every slot at the rating you are about to reach is already occupied,
your advancement stays banked and ready -- it is not lost -- until a
slot opens or you choose a different Skill to bring up instead.
Attributes and Edges
Natural Attributes and certain advanced Edges can be purchased
directly with Character Points once you have enough banked. The menu
shows the exact CP cost of your next Attribute rating and which Edges
you are currently eligible to buy.
Respecialization
If you want to redirect a Skill you have invested in, the menu can
lower it for a Character Point cost. Some of the mastery you already
earned near your old rating is retained for a short while in case you
climb back -- but rebuilding all the way back to your old heights
still means earning the higher ranks again.
